High Rock Health and Physical Education work together to support students’ overall wellness during the middle school years. While Health and Physical Education are taught as separate classes, both focus on helping students build the skills, knowledge, and habits needed to stay active, make healthy choices, and take responsibility for their own well-being.
The High Rock wellness program builds on the foundation students develop in elementary school and prepares them for the increased independence of high school. Instruction is guided by a six-dimensional wellness model that includes social, emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational/leisure wellness. Students learn that wellness involves more than physical health and that balance and self-awareness are important parts of a healthy lifestyle.
In Physical Education, students develop and practice skills through a variety of movement-based units. These include invasion games, striking games, and net games that focus on teamwork, strategy, and skill development. Students also participate in team challenge activities that promote cooperation, communication, and problem-solving. Leisure-based units help students explore activities they can enjoy outside of school.
In Health Education, students learn about topics that support personal growth and decision-making. Units include nutrition, communication skills, relationships, decision-making, and age-appropriate sex education. Lessons are designed to be practical and relevant, giving students tools they can use in real-life situations.
Together, Health and Physical Education at High Rock help students build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop habits that support lifelong health and wellness.
