Live Animals

Our animals are all doing well and are off on their extended vacations.  Thank you to all of our volunteer  hosts!

NPS teachers can enhance their curriculum with a live animal visit from the Science Center
[Animal loan program is currently on hold]

Our animal collection includes: Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and other invertebrates. Most of these are Short Term Loan Animals while some are available for Special Visits only.

Short Term Animal Loan (one day up to 2 weeks):

The following is a list of animals available for loan to your classroom:

Box Turtle (Eloise)

*These animals must be requested at least two weeks in advance of date needed in classroom.

A Science Center staffer will deliver the animal, introduce it to a classroom, and give students ideas for animal-related observations and activities. The staffer will also discuss the animal's habitat and care.

The animal will arrive with a cage, food, bedding, and care instructions. During the length of the stay, students and teachers are responsible for animal care. The Science Center staff will be available to answer questions and concerns.

If the animal visit falls over a long weekend or an extended break, the Science Center will help with arrangements for animal care.
If a parent would like to take it home during this time they need to fill out a Short term animal loan form.

Boris the Cornsnake (RIP) was a popular classroom visitor.

Special Visits

Some animals in our collection require special care and cannot be kept overnight in a classroom. Teachers can request that a Science Center staffer bring the animal in for a brief one-hour visit.

Animal visitors include Tort, our yellow-footed tortoise.

Tort, the Yellow-Footed Tortoise, likes to show up at KASE and Kindergarten programs.

Animal Care Student Volunteers - Afternoons from 3:15 - 4:15

Middle School and High school volunteers are encouraged and welcomed during the academic year. Volunteer hours are accumulated and used toward the Community Service graduation requirement. Students learn animal handling and animal care. Interested students can check at their school on how to sign up.
