The NCE Summer Explorations program offers students entering grades 1–9 weeklong, half-day morning and full-day enrichment classes in June/July. There are classes in science, games and challenges, culture, fine art, crafts, writing, technology, engineering and more to appeal to the inquisitive, active, and creative child. All classes are taught by Needham Public Schools teachers and staff. The relaxed and fun setting of Summer Explorations provides an excellent opportunity for children to develop new skills, make new friends and explore new interests!

What to Bring
At  least one face covering or face mask; if the face covering is cloth, we request that you launder it each day after the program

• A nut/peanut free snack and an individual cloth napkin or placemat, as snacks will be consumed in the classroom during inclement weather

• A nut/peanut free lunch (for full-day students); either brought from home or you may opt-in to our complimentary bagged lunch program (see instructions below)

• A labeled water bottle; drinking fountains will not be operating in order to maintain the health of studentsA towel for your child to sit on for outdoor breaks, snack or lunch

• Personal-size tube of hand sanitizer (recommended, not required, hand sanitizer will also be available in our classrooms)

• Please do not send your child to Summer Explorations in flip flops. Ideally students will wear sandals with straps, or sneakers.

Complimentary Bagged Lunch Program
ALL Summer Explorations students may opt-in to receive a complimentary nut-free bagged lunch, prepared by the Needham Public Schools nutrition services department. Full day students will eat their lunch during Summer Explorations. Morning class students will take their bagged lunch home with them at dismissal.

Fun and Games Unit
Students participating in full day Summer Explorations classes will enjoy a 40-minute Fun and Games unit during which students will go, together with their class, to the gym (or outside) to enjoy a block of fun activities and games with one of our Summer Explorations P.E. and Wellness Instructors. Please do not send your child to Summer Explorations in flip flops. Ideally students will wear sandals with straps, or sneakers.

Arrival / Dismissal / Absences
Parking/Driving Policies:

Please drive slowly and with caution when entering and exiting our locations. There is ample parking, but please do not park in any reserved spaces. You may pull up to the curb in front of the school if you prefer to drop off your child.

Arrival -- Broadmeadow Location:
Students may be dropped off between 8:30am and 8:45am. There will be no adult supervision before 8:30am. Please bring your child to the gym entrance which is off of the lower parking lot. Due to Covid safety precautions parents will not be allowed to enter the building. You may pull up to the curb by the lower entrance to drop off your child or if you choose to park, you must walk your child to the door. Summer Explorations staff will be on hand to guide students into the gym to meet their instructor. Please be sure that your child knows what class they are taking.

Late Arrival -- Broadmeadow Location:
Students arriving after 9:00am should be brought to the front entrance at Broadmeadow. Please press the buzzer and someone will come greet your child (please do not leave until someone has greeted your child). Please be patient as it may take a time for our staff to reach the doors.

Dismissal -- Broadmeadow Location:
Dismissal for morning classes is at 11:45am. Dismissal for full day classes is at 3:15pm. Students will be dismissed from the main front entrance. Instructors will line up their classes along the front traffic circle (which will be blocked from car traffic). Please park and walk up to meet the student(s) you are picking up (there will be no curbside pick up option for dismissal).

Prompt Pick-up:
For safety reasons, students must be picked up promptly at dismissal time. If you are delayed, there is a 5-minute grace period before late charges begin. Delays beyond 5 minutes will result in a charge of $1.00/minute for any additional time that the OnSite Coordinator remains with your child. NCE will bill you for the charges.

Please be sure that your child knows what class they are taking.

Dismissal -- High Rock Location:

Dismissal for morning classes is at noon. Dismissal for full day classes is at 3:30pm. Instructors will bring their student out of the Linden Street entrance to be dismissed to their authorized adult. Students whose registration indicates that they may walk home will be allowed to walk once they check out with their instructor. Not sure if your child is listed as a walker? Please send them to the program with a note giving them permission to walk home.

Absences:
The Summer Explorations On-Site Coordinator takes attendance to make sure that all children in the program are accounted for. For your child’s safety, we cannot accept verbal communication of a planned absence, late arrival or early dismissal. Please send your child with written notification, to give to their instructor, of any PLANNED CHANGES to your child’s schedule. Morning classes: 8:45–11:45am
Full day classes: 8:45am–3:15pm

Morning sessions: 9:00am–12:00pm
Full day classes: 9:00am–3:30pm

No Transportation:
No transportation is provided between schools or home for Summer Explorations program participants.
