METCO Elementary School

The experience of our METCO students throughout elementary school is a blend of academic, social and emotional learning.

For students entering kindergarten and first grade, we have a special Jumpstart program that introduces the curriculum to our students and their families. Parents meet the staff and the district administrators, and receive an overview of the elementary curriculum. This program does just what its title suggests: It gives our entering students a jumpstart, and a chance to be welcomed to the district in a unique and supportive way!

Our METCO Coordinator, Ms. Peeples, gets to know each and every one of our METCO students in the elementary schools. In some cases, her time with the children is shared on the playground, or observing them in classrooms, lunch groups, and on the bus. She provides “shout outs” to recognize the accomplishments and outstanding efforts of our METCO students. Along with the Needham Public School faculty and staff, our METCO Coordinator advocates for our METCO students and contributes to their success academically, socially and emotionally.

The METCO Family Friends Committee holds social events on the early release days. These events, like the popular ice cream social, are open to all families and are great opportunities to build friendships between students who live in Needham and those who live in Boston.
